The United States, the self-appointed "police force of the world," betrayed its true colours as the world's largest arms seller and warmonger on Tuesday.
Under the banner of "securing regional security and stability," the US Government decided to sell a huge package of advanced weapons to Taiwan, ironically exposing Asia-Pacific peace to dangerous separatist forces in Taiwan.
This wrong decision is certainly strongly opposed by the Chinese Government.
First, the sales package is a blatant violation of the three Sino-US joint communiques of 1972, 1978 and 1982, the cornerstone of Sino-US ties, especially the one signed in 1982, which details specific restrictions on US arms sales to Taiwan.
Second, it sent a misleading signal to those advocators of "Taiwan independence" both on the island and in the United States.
Like all other countries that have established diplomatic relations with China, the United States has formally acknowledged the Chinese Government's position that there is but one China and Taiwan is a part of China.
Regrettably, it has repeatedly contravened its solemn acknowledgements to China and frequently helped foment the separatist forces in Taiwan so as to contain China.
The latest decision to sell Taiwan such sophisticated arms as Kidd-class destroyers, diesel-powered submarines and the P-3C anti-submarine aircraft is an overt attempt to obstruct the peaceful reunification of China.
That decision, on the other hand, will egg on the pro-independence elements to continue separatist activities.
Such a gross interference in China's internal affairs and a grave threat to China's security will only jeopardize the peace and stability of the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large.
After almost 100 days in office, it is time for the new US administration to take responsible and constructive measures to arrest the downward spiral of Sino-US relations.
As for the Taiwan authorities, it is time they got rid of their dangerous and counter-productive misconception that foreign weapons will help them resist the trend towards reunification.
