| China kicks off Water Week to mark World Water Day |

China has kicked-off "National Water Week" to help mark the World Water Day (Mar.21), whose focus of this year is on the importance of water and the prevention of water related disasters. china also helps establish a harmonious relationship between people and the efficient use of water resources.
In line with the theme of "Water and Disasters", China's "National Water Week" will promote new concept regarding the control and prevention of water disasters, as well as how to properly utilize water resources. The aim is to ensure that human beings live in harmony with nature. Chinese water conservation experts say the idea fits well into China's development reality.
Wang Hao, Water Resources Expert in China Institute of Water Resources & Hydropower Research said: "The continental monsoon climate in China results in 75 to 80 percent of rainfall coming in the flooding season between June and September. Excessive rainfall causes flooding and when the flooding recedes, the drought season follows. There's two volatile sides concerning water utilization in North China. We should emphasize a harmonious relationship between humans and water utilization, and turn flood water into useful resources."
With this new concept, China's water conservation projects now aim to take care of the two sides of the coin -- to prevent the hazards of flooding, while utilizing flood water for the benefit of human beings. For instance, China is trying to divert water from water rich areas to shrinking wetlands -- to restore these ecological environments to normalcy. Efforts are also being made to protect water resources in water-scarce regions in Western China. |
