Jiang Zemin said: "Relevant departments of the Chinese government, including its agencies stationed abroad, should strengthen their ties with compatriots from Taiwan, listen to their views and demands, care about and take into account their interests and make every effort to help them solve their problems." It is an important responsibility of Chinese embassies and consulates abroad to protect the legitimate interests of Taiwan compatriots residing overseas and help them solve their problems. When the lives, properties and legitimate interests of Taiwan compatriots residing overseas are threatened or infringed upon, Chinese embassies, consulates and other agencies have an unshirkable duty to provide help and protection. In fact, Chinese missions overseas have in the past done a great deal of work through diplomatic and other channels in this regard. When, for example, Taiwan's fishermen and fishing boats were detained in Somalia, Argentina and the Philippines, and when Taiwan workers were evacuating from Kuwait during the Gulf War, Chinese missions treated Taiwan compatriots the same as mainlanders, providing protection and making proper arrangements.
In future, following Jiang Zemin's call, Chinese missions abroad will do an even better job in safeguarding the legitimate interests of Taiwan compatriots and providing services for them. |
